Applying to Become CDL Driver
If you're applying for the first time, you must first pass a knowledge test. You'll need a Pennsylvania CDL manual to study, and you can get a copy from any Driver License Center or by downloading one from the PennDOT website. Every question on the exam is based on information found in the manual.
Before taking the actual PA CDL test, you should take at least one CDL practice test. These online CDL practice exams feature questions almost identical to those found on the actual test.
After you pass the knowledge test, you'll need to wait 15 days before taking the driving test, which consists of three parts: a pre trip inspection, driving skills, and the road test. Unlike the knowledge test, you will need to make an appointment. You can do this online, from PennDOT's website, or by calling (800) 932-4600.
