How does the GVWR affect the CDL class of commercial license I need?
In terms of commercial vehicles, the gross vehicle weight rating (or, GVWR) is the absolute heaviest your particular commercial vehicle can be when it’s loaded.
The GVWR includes the weight of:

The GVWR Helps Determine the CDL Class
The class of commercial license you’ll apply for will depend on the GVWR of the commercial vehicle you’ll drive.- A Class A commercial license allows you to drive any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, if the GVWR of the vehicle(s) you’re towing is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- A Class B commercial license allows you to drive any one vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or a vehicle that’s towing another vehicle that’s not heavier than 10,000 pounds.
- A Class C commercial license allows you to drive any one vehicle, or any combination of vehicles, that doesn’t meet Class A or Class B requirements. The vehicle(s) must be either designed to carry 16 or more passengers, or placarded for hazardous materials.
