Most state Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) centers require you to show proof of purchase in order to transfer a car title. Instances when you can transfer a motor vehicle title without the bill of sale include:

  • Giving the car as a gift.
  • Transitioning a salvage vehicle to a reconstructed auto.

Pink Slip Requirements to Transfer a Motor Vehicle Title

The pink slip or bill of sale is required in order to prove that you paid all applicable sales tax on the motor vehicle. A pink slip also proves that you are the legal owner of the auto.

When you purchase or sale an auto, make sure that the bill of sale includes:

  • Your first and last names.
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • Seller’s name and street address.
  • Date of purchase.
  • Purchase price (including sales tax that you paid on the motor vehicle).
  • Odometer reading.
If you purchase a used car or a vehicle from a relative or friend, ask them to create a bill of sale for you on a blank sheet of paper that includes the above information.  Keep a copy of the bill of sale for your records with the vehicle’s other title transfer documents.

Provide a copy of the pink slip or bill of sale to your state motor vehicles division when you complete the titles transfer application.
