Am I required to stop at flashing stoplights if no other vehicles are in sight?
Requirements to Stop at a Flashing Red Light
Throughout the United States drivers are required to stop at a constant red traffic light. Running a red light or a stop sign could cause you to receive a traffic ticket, which, in turn, could cause you to receive points on your drivers license. However, traffic laws around braking at flashing stoplights are not always readily known by licensed drivers.
Flashing red lights are similar to stop signs. As a licensed driver, safety laws require you to stop when you reach these lights. Check and make sure that the pathway is clear before you proceed through the lights.
You must stop before proceeding even if there are no other vehicles in sight. Practice defensive driving and brake for flashing red lights similar to how you would come to a complete stop at a stoplight or at a stop sign.
Keep in mind that there are other kinds of flashing lights to look out for. For example, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, if a school bus has its flashing red lights on, you are required to stop until the school bus turns off the lights and pulls in its stop signal arm.
