California Motorcycle Permit and License Renewal Fees

The California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) processes motorcycle license and motorcycle permit fees. Use your credit card to pay the license renewal fee online at the DMV website.

If you pay to renew your motorcycle license in paper form, use a check or money order.

Fees for permits and licenses to operate motorcycles in CA follow:

  • Initial motorcycle permit or license: $31 (This covers the cost of the written motorcycle test and the road license test.)
  • Annual motorcycle license renewal: $31
  • Duplicate or replacement motorcycle license: $25
The minimum age to receive a motorcycle license in CA is 16 years old. You must be at least 15 and a half years old to receive a permit. As with a drivers license, your parents or legal guardians must sign your permit and license applications if you are younger than 18 years old.

Study the CA motorcycle manual (it is available at local DMV offices and online at the DMV website). Take one or more practice test based on the information in the manual so that you can get your license as soon as possible and start motorcycle riding.

If you already have a valid CA driver license, you do not have to present identification to prove your citizenship before you take the written and road motorcycle test. You will have to complete a DMV approved motorcycle safety course before you are issued a license.
