Applying for a Texas Motorcycle Permit

You must be at least 15 years of age in order to apply for a Texas motorcycle permit. You can request a permit by visiting a TX Department of Public Safety (DPS) driver license office.

Once you complete the application and are ready to submit it, you then need to:

  1. Provide a photograph and fingerprints.
  2. Show proof of identity and your Social Security number.
  3. Pass a vision screening.
  4. Submit a parental consent form and proof of current school attendance (if you're younger than 18; similar to what you'd have to do if you were applying for a regular permit or drivers license).
  5. Submit proof of a valid insurance policy (only riders who own their own motorcycles).
  6. Pass a written motorcycle test covering the basics of motorcycle safety. To prepare for this exam, take a practice test or two.
With a motorcycle permit, you can ride with someone in sight who is 21 years of age or older and has a valid Texas motorcycle license. Don't go beyond these restrictions. Remember, a motorcycle permit is similar to the learners permit teenagers receive before taking drivers ed or driver training, and the purpose of this type of drivers permit is to allow you to legally practice motorcycle riding.
