Do I have to take a TX motorcycle safety course or drivers ed? Texas
Texas Motorcycle Safety Courses
Texas, like many states, offers motorcycle safety courses for people interested in earning their motorcycle license. If you're 15 to 17 years old, you must complete the state's Basic Motorcycle Operator Training Course.
If you're older than 17, you have the option of completing either the Basic Motorcycle Operator Training Course or the Advanced Motor Operator Training Course - or both - but neither is required.
Basic Motorcycle Operator Training Course
The Basic Motorcycle Operator Training Course is for new riders. It teaches the essential mental and physical skills one will need to enjoy street riding in a safe manner, as the drivers ed class you take to learn how to drive a car and earn your regular drivers license does not cover these topics.
The Basic Motorcycle Operator Training Course is mandatory for Texas residents age 15 to 17 who have a motorcycle permit and wish to receive a motorcycle license. Riders of all ages are strongly encouraged to take the motorcycle safety course, however, and many adult motorcycle riders choose to complete the course because:
- Adults who complete the course can request to have their skill motorcycle test waived when they apply for their first motorcycle license.
- It often provides a significant discount on their motorcycle insurance premiums.
Advanced Motorcycle Operator Training Course
The Advanced Motorcycle Operator Training Course builds on the information about safely and legally operating motorcycles taught in the Basic Motorcycle Operator Training Course. It is for the experienced motorcycle rider and teaches street survival skills. Both of these classes are offered by various contracted sponsors who have been approved by the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Locating a Motorcycle Safety Course
Motorcycle safety courses are offered at over 40 locations throughout the state of Texas and at times to fit almost any schedule. They teach the basics of motorcycle riding and provide opportunities for you to take a practice test before earning your motorcycle drivers license. To learn more about enrolling in this form of driver training, call the TX DPS at (800) 292-5787 or (512) 424-2021 in Austin.
