What are the TX permit restrictions after I pass the motorcycle permit test? Texas

New Driver Checklist

Texas Motorcycle Permit Restrictions

The purpose of getting a motorcycle permit is much like the one for getting a learners permit when you complete drivers ed or driver training and apply for your regular driver license. A permit allows you to legally practice motorcycle riding so you can develop the skills you need to pass the road test that is required to earn a Texas motorcycle license.

After you have a motorcycle permit, you may operate a motorcycle with someone in sight who is at least 21 years of age and has a valid motorcycle license. Depending upon your circumstances, this could be a parent or guardian, qualified motorcycle safety instructor, or another rider licensed to operate motorcycles.

Also, Texas teens ages 15 to 17 who wish to receive a motorcycle license after earning a permit must complete an approved motorcycle safety course.

Getting a Texas Motorcycle Permit

Remember, to get a permit you must be at least 15 years of age. There are absolutely no exceptions made to this rule. Visit a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) drivers license office and complete the following steps:

  1. Submit an application with a photograph and fingerprints.
  2. Show proof of identity and Social Security number.
  3. Submit proof of current school attendance.
  4. Show parental authorization.
  5. Pass the written motorcycle test and vision screening.
  6. Pay the required fees.

Information about the written exam, as well as practice test questions and even what to expect once it's time for your driving test, can be found in the TX DPS motorcycle operators manual.
