Do I have to take a FL motorcycle safety course or drivers ed? Florida

New Driver Checklist

The Florida Rider Trainer Program

Yes. Beginning in July 2008, the state legislature ruled that everyone interested in obtaining a motorcycle license or endorsement must successfully complete (i.e., pass) the Basic Rider Course through the Florida Rider Trainer Program.

This motorcycle safety program is designed to develop your motorcycle riding skills, and it isn't just meant for teenagers, either; it applies to riders of all ages.

Once you've passed the motorcycle safety course, your results will be electronically sent to the FL DHSMV, and you'll be on your way to gaining your motorcycle license or driver license endorsement.

Keep in mind, to get your motorcycle permit, you'll need to pass a written motorcycle test. The motorcycle rider course is an excellent way to prepare for the road test, but taking a motorcycle written practice test or two can help get you ready for the knowledge test.

If you have any other questions about drivers ed or driver training for motorcycle riders - or other matters regarding motorcycles - consult the FL DHSMV at (850) 617-2000. Or, stop by a drivers license office.
