Making a Motorcycle Test Appointment

You do not need an appointment for the written test, but you do need one for the road test.

Written Motorcycle Test

These tests are given on a walk-in basis at any NY DMV location, the same place where you’d handle any other driver license matter.

Before arriving, be sure to study the state's motorcycle manual. This handbook teaches you all about legally and safely operating motorcycles on NY roads, and all test questions are based on information found in the manual including group motorcycle riding formations, crossing graded bridges, and proper lane position when passing. In addition, you should also take at least one practice test. You can find these online.

Pass the written test and you'll receive a motorcycle permit. It's valid for one year if you own a NY drivers license, or five years if you don't own another class of license.

Riding Motorcycle Test

Before making an appointment, keep in mind that if you do not own another class of license, you will be required to complete a driver training or drivers ed course. You DO NOT need a driver education certificate or proof of attending a pre-licensing course if own a New York driver license.

To make a test appointment for your motorcycle license, call (518) 402-2100 or schedule one online. When making your appointment, have the following:

  • Your motorcycle permit. You will need the Client ID number located on the permit.
  • The zip code of the test area where you plan to take the skills test.
  • Paper and pen if you schedule by phone for writing down your test date and time.
Be aware that the road test requirement will be waived if you complete a New York-approved motorcycle safety course.
