Making a Motorcycle Test Appointment

These tests are given on a walk-in basis at any NY DMV location, the same place where you’d handle any other driver license matter.
Before arriving, be sure to study the state's motorcycle manual. This handbook teaches you all about legally and safely operating motorcycles on NY roads, and all test questions are based on information found in the manual including group motorcycle riding formations, crossing graded bridges, and proper lane position when passing. In addition, you should also take at least one practice test. You can find these online.
Pass the written test and you'll receive a motorcycle permit. It's valid for one year if you own a NY drivers license, or five years if you don't own another class of license.
