Renewing a NC Motorcycle License

The process to renew your motorcycle license in North Carolina is the same as renewing a basic drivers license.
 
The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (NC DMV) will mail you a license renewal card before your license is set to expire, although you are still obligated to renew your license even if you don't receive this notice. The renew license reminder card is a courtesy and is mailed to the last address on file. If you don't receive the card, it's likely the DMV does not have your correct contact information.

When you visit the DMV driver license office, you will need to:

  • Show your Social Security card or proof of legal presence in the United States.
  • Show either your current NC drivers license or two forms of identification.
  • Complete a vision screening.
  • Complete the traffic signs recognition test.
  • Complete any motorcycle riding skills tests that are requested by the examiner.
The fee for a motorcycle license is $1.75 per year added onto the fee for your regular drivers license or CDL. Only cash or personal checks will be accepted. Unfortunately, DMV offices are not equipped to handle payment by credit card or debit card.

Remember to renew your license as soon as possible; getting caught operating motorcycles without a valid license could mean a citation and fines.

Out-of-State Motorcycle License Renewal

If you are temporarily residing outside the state due to military service, educational commitments, or business travel, call your drivers license office to ask if you are eligible for renewal by mail. The NC DMV has the authority to grant temporary drivers license renewal for motorcycle riders in certain circumstances.
