What are the NC permit restrictions after I pass the motorcycle permit test? North Carolina
NC Motorcycle Permit Restrictions
North Carolina law states that a person must have at least a Level 3 Class C drivers license with either a motorcycle endorsement or a motorcycle learners permit before being allowed to ride a motorcycle on public roads. The purpose of a motorcycle permit is to allow you the time to practice motorcycle riding under the supervision of a more experienced rider so you can pass the driving test that is needed to earn your motorcycle license.Your permit has no restrictions as to what time of day you can ride your motorcycle, but it is important to keep in mind that you are not allowed to carry passengers with a motorcycle permit. If you want to give your friends a ride, you need to have a valid North Carolina motorcycle license.
Getting a Motorcycle Permit
Haven't gotten your permit yet? Don't worry - it's pretty easy.Although some states require that you complete a motorcycle safety drivers ed or driver training course to receive a motorcycle permit, North Carolina has no such requirement. Of course, what you learn in such a course would come in handy once it’s time to take the road test portion of your motorcycle test.
To receive a permit, you must complete a vision screening, traffic sign identification test, and general motorcycle safety written knowledge test. Information about the written knowledge test, as well as practice test questions to help you study, can be found in the NC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) motorcycle operators manual.
A motorcycle permit is $15 and valid for 18 months. If you are between the ages of 16 and 18, you will need a parent or guardian's permission in order to receive a motorcycle permit.
For more information about obtaining a motorcycle permit or license, or general information about operating motorcycles in NC, contact your local DMV driver license office.
