Applying for Your NJ Motorcycle License (18 and Older)

Before you can apply for a motorcycle license you must first obtain a motorcycle permit. It's a relatively easy process that does not require enrolling in a driver ed class or taking a motorcycle safety course.

To apply, visit any New Jersey MVC driver license office and:

  1. Complete a motorcycle license application.
  2. Satisfy the state's 6 Point ID Verification requirements.
  3. Pass a vision test.
  4. Pass a motorcycle test (knowledge).
  5. Pay the $5 permit fee with cash or a check, money order, or credit card (American Express, MasterCard, Visa).
The motorcycle test is a general knowledge exam based on motorcycle riding. You'll be quizzed on everything related to motorcycles including proper passing formations, motorcycle riding techniques for crossing graded bridges, and space management.

To study for the test you'll need to grab a New Jersey motorcycle manual from any MVC location, or download one from the MVC website. Manuals are free.

After studying the manual, you'll next want to take at least one motorcycle practice test. Found online, these tests feature multiple-choice questions just like those found on the actual exam.

Pass and you'll receive a motorcycle permit. You must hold it for a minimum of 20 days before you can make a road test appointment.

Motorcycle Driving Test

On the day of your test, arrive with proper identification, your motorcycle permit, and a motorcycle that's legally registered and insured. If you own a passenger drivers license (Class D) you can transport the motorcycle to the testing area by flatbed truck or trailer so as to avoid the need for being accompanied by another licensed motorcycle rider.

Pass the test and you'll receive either a Class E, motorcycle-only license, or, if you own a Class D license, a motorcycle endorsement.

Road Test Waiver

Though not required, the MVC highly recommends enrolling in a motorcycle safety course. Besides the obvious advantage of learning how to become a safe rider, the MVC will waive your road test requirement if you complete a state-approved driver training course through the Motorcycle Safety Education Program.
