What are the NJ permit restrictions after I pass the motorcycle permit test? New Jersey

New Driver Checklist

New Jersey Motorcycle Permit Restrictions

A New Jersey motorcycle permit comes with the following restrictions:

  • You must always ride under the supervision of a licensed motorcycle rider.
  • No operating motorcycles between 11:01 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Obtaining a Motorcycle Permit and Motorcycle License

To obtain a NJ motorcycle permit you must pass a written motorcycle test. The entire exam is based on topics covered in the New Jersey motorcycle manual, your main study source. You can grab a free copy from any MVC driver license office, or you can download one from the MVC website.

After studying the manual, you'll next want to take an online motorcycle practice test. These tests flourish online, allowing you to take as many tests as possible until you feel certain of acing the actual exam.

You do not need to take a driver training course or a special drivers ed class to qualify for a motorcycle permit; though, doing so before the driving test has its benefits. See below.

After holding your permit for 20 days you'll become eligible to take a motorcycle road test, which requires an appointment. On the day of the driving test arrive at the test site with proper identification, your motorcycle permit and a motorcycle that's registered and insured. If you own a drivers license, you can transport your motorcycle to the test site via trailer or flatbed truck.

Pass the test and receive a NJ motorcycle license.

Motorcycle Safety Course

Even though the New Jersey MVC does not mandate enrolling in a safety course, it highly encourages all motorcycle riders to attend a three-day class. The class is designed to help you hone your motorcycle riding skills and, as a bonus incentive, the MVC will waive your road test requirement if you complete a state-approved safety course through the Motorcycle Safety Education Program.
