Obtaining Your Illinois Motorcycle Permit

Before you can obtain an Illinois motorcycle license you must first hold a motorcycle permit or what's referred to in Illinois as an instruction permit.

To apply, visit your local Secretary of State (SOS) driver license office and:

  1. Complete a motorcycle learners permit application.
  2. Provide proper identification, including your Social Security card.
  3. Provide an Affidavit of Consent (if younger than 18).
  4. Provide proof of completing an approved drivers ed class or a driver training course or present your IL drivers license (if younger than 18). If this applies to you, you must also present proof of currently attending an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Motorcycle Rider Education course. This is similar to a traditional drivers ed course, only it’s focused on motorcycles and teaches safe and legal motorcycle riding on Illinois roads.
  5. Pass the vision test.
  6. Pass the written permit test.
  7. Pay the $10 motorcycle license fee with cash or a check.

Studying for Written Motorcycle Test

To pass the written motorcycle test, study the state's motorcycle manual. Every question on the test is based only on information contained in the manual, making it your prime study source. You can get a manual from any SOS office, or by downloading one from the SOS website.

After studying, take at least one motorcycle practice test. These exams abound online, allowing you to take as many practice tests as needed. Practice test questions are similar to those found on the actual exam, giving you a heads up on what to expect.

Pass the test and you'll receive a motorcycle drivers permit.

Motorcycle License Road Test

If you're 18, hold a valid IL drivers license, and provide proof of completing an IDOT-approved motorcycle safety class, the SOS will waive the road test requirement.

If you must take the road test, arrive with a motorcycle that's registered and insured.
