To apply for an Illinois motorcycle permit, visit any Secretary of State (SOS) driver license office and follow these steps:- Complete an application for a motorcycle permit/license.
- Provide proper identification including your Social Security card.
- Provide an Affidavit of Consent signed by a parent or guardian.
- Provide proof that you've completed a state-approved drivers ed class or a driver training course. Or, if you hold a IL drivers license, present that instead.
- Provide proof that you're currently enrolled in an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Motorcycle Rider Education course. Similar to other kinds of driver training (though, focusing on motorcycles), this motorcycle safety course teaches safe and legal motorcycle riding skills.
- Pass the vision test.
- Pass the written motorcycle test. (This is the knowledge test).
- Pay $10 application fee with cash or a check.
When you think you're ready for the actual test, double-check by taking at least one motorcycle practice test. These exams abound online, allowing you to take as many as needed. All questions are similar in style and content to the ones you'll find on the actual motorcycle test.
Pass and you'll earn an Illinois motorcycle permit.
Pass the Skills Motorcycle Test
Next, you'll need to pass a skills test, or what is also known as a road or driving test. No appointment is needed.When you arrive at the test site be sure to have a motorcycle that is registered and insured. Also, have with you your motorcycle permit and the certificate, proving you successfully completed the state’s 20-hour motorcycle safety program.
