Applying for Your Illinois Motorcycle License (18 and Older)

Okay, before you get your motorcycle license you must get your motorcycle permit, and here are the steps to take to get that going:

  1. Visit any Secretary of State (SOS) driver license office.
  2. Complete an application for a motorcycle permit/license.
  3. Provide proper identification, including your Social Security card.
  4. Pass the vision test. This may be waived if you recently proved your eyes meet state vision standards while applying for an IL drivers license.
  5. Pass the written motorcycle test.
  6. Pay the $10 application fee with cash or a check.
NOTE: No proof of drivers ed or driver training is needed when applying for the motorcycle permit.

The written motorcycle test is similar to the one taken for a drivers license, only it focuses exclusively on motorcycles and safe motorcycle riding. To prepare you'll need to study the state's motorcycle manual. You can obtain a copy, for free, from any SOS office, or you can save gas and time by downloading from the SOS website.

Before taking the motorcycle exam, be sure to take at least one motorcycle practice test. All questions are similar in style and content to the ones you'll find on the actual motorcycle exam, allowing you to gauge if you're ready to test.

Pass and you'll earn an Illinois motorcycle permit, which you must hold before you can apply for a motorcycle license or endorsement.

Applying for the Full Motorcycle License

There are two ways you can do this:

  1. Take, and pass, a road test.
  2. Complete an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Motorcycle Rider Education Course. Participation in IDOT's 20-hour motorcycle safety course will waive your need for taking the driving test.
If you opt for the course, take your course completion certificate to any SOS office to receive your Illinois motorcycle license or endorsement.
