What is the helmet law for riding motorcycles in Illinois? Illinois
Illinois Scooter, Moped, and Motorcycle Helmet Laws
Motorcycle riding in Illinois requires no headgear. Illinois is one of only three states – New Hampshire and Iowa the other two – that has no helmet law for any rider regardless of age, experience, or bike (this includes mopeds and scooters).Even though there are no safety laws governing the use of helmets, the IL Secretary of State (SOS) and insurance providers strongly encourage wearing one while riding motorcycles. This recommendation is supported by the following statistics posted in the state's motorcycle manual:
- Helmeted riders are three times more likely to survive head injuries than those not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
- Crash analyses show that head and neck injuries account for the majority of serious and fatal injuries to motorcycle riders.
- Meets U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) approval.
- Fits snugly around your head.
- Is free of cracks, loose padding, or frayed straps.
