Motorcycle Permit Fees

Getting a motorcycle license starts with a permit for a $10 fee. (You will also need a general drivers license, if you don’t already have one.)

To get your permit, you’ll have to pass a knowledge test. The motorcycle test will quiz you on motorcycle safety and traffic rules.

Make sure to study for your written test by taking a practice test. Look in the PA Motorcycle Handbook for study questions, or purchase a practice license test from an online drivers ed company.

NOTE: The permit is good for one year. After that, you must apply for new permit and pay the $10 fee again.

Motorcycle License Fees

The fee you pay for your motorcycle license depends on your age and how long it’s valid:

  • Initial Permit and Four-Year Motorcycle License: $43
  • Initial Permit and Two-Year Motorcycle License (65 and Older): $32.50
Of course, bumping your permit up to an actual motorcycle license takes a bit more than just paying a fee. Motorcycle riding can be challenging to master, and PennDOT also requires you to take the motorcycle skills portion of the license test to prove you can:

  • Perform left circles, right circles, and figure eights.
  • Know how to perform a pre-trip inspection.
  • You will have three opportunities to pass the skills test, at different appointments. After that, you must reapply for a new permit.

Motorcycle License Renewal Fees

Your driver license with motorcycle endorsement will expire every four years if you’re younger than 65, or every two years if you’re 65 or older.

To renew your motorcycle license, the fees are:

  • Four-Year Renewal with Motorcycle: $48
  • Two-Year Renewal with Motorcycle (65 and Older): $27.50

Removing Endorsement

If you decide not to drive motorcycles any more:

  1. Write “DO NOT RENEW CLASS M” on your Pennsylvania renewal notice.
  2. Deduct $20 from the fee.
  3. Renew your driver license as usual.
