Applying for Your PA Motorcycle Permit

Getting a motorcycle license in Pennsylvania is a multi-step process and, ultimately, that’s what you’re working toward, right?

First you must apply for a motorcycle learners permit. This is different from a typical drivers permit and will lead toward you getting the “M” endorsement on your drivers license that allow you to drive motorcycles.

To get your motorcycle permit:

  1. Fill out the Motorcycle Learner’s Permit application.
  2. Bring the application and the $10 application fee to any PennDOT driver license center.
  3. Pass the written knowledge motorcycle test and obtain your drivers permit. (See below for tips on how to pass this test.)
Once you get your permit, you can either:

  • Practice your motorcycle riding skills with a licensed motorcycle rider and then make an appointment for the motorcycle skills test to demonstrate your motorcycle safety skills, or,
  • Enroll in the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program (PAMSP), completion of which will waive your requirement to pass the skills test.
Once you pass the skills test or complete PAMSP, you will be issued a regular motorcycle license for $43; $32.50 if you’re 65 or older. The license is good for four years if you’re younger than 65, and for two years if you’re older. You’ll renew it at the same time as your drivers license.

Passing the Written Motorcycle Test

Passing the motorcycle written test will be easier if you study the manual and take at least one long practice test. Aim for one with 50 to 100 multiple-choice questions. Today these practice tests are available for purchase from online drivers ed companies.

Driver training to learn how to properly ride motorcycles is also important for your safety and the safety of others. Most people cannot just get onto motorcycles and know what to do; there are many elements involved. Though Pennsylvania does not require that you take a formal training course, it will only help you stay alive. You might also get an insurance discount; ask your insurer.
