Appointment for Written Test

You do not need to make an appointment to take a written motorcycle test to get a motorcycle permit, though it will help cut down on your wait time at PennDOT.

Remember to take at least one practice test to prepare. These are available through your drivers ed class, if you’re enrolled; or by buying one online based on the PA Motorcycle Manual. These cost between $10 and $15 and are different than the test for a drivers license.

Appointment for Motorcycle Safety and Skills Test

You do need to schedule an appointment for your skills test at a PennDOT driver license office, unless you plan to get your motorcycle license through the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program (PAMSP). This test is different from the skills test for a regular drivers license. See details below.

The Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program

Pennsylvania offers a state-sponsored Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program (PAMSP), which is a driver training course for riding motorcycles. At the end, you get a motorcycle license, and you don’t have to take the state skills test.

If you learn on your own or through another program, you will have to take the motorcycle skills test.
