What is covered on the PA motorcycle riding skills test and written exam? Pennsylvania
Passing the Motorcycle Test
There are actually two tests to prepare for and pass before you can get your motorcycle license:- The written knowledge test
- The road skills test.
Written Knowledge Test
The written test consists of material from the PA Motorcycle Operator’s Manual, available on the PennDOT website. It includes things like:
- Traffic laws.
- Motorcycle safety, such as how to make a quick stop.
- Helmet requirements.
You will take the written test first to get a motorcycle permit, even if you already have a drivers license. To study for the written test, read the manual and then take a practice test. This is available for sale from drivers ed companies online; also check with PennDOT to see if they have any free tests.
Road Skills Test
The next step, after you have your permit and have practiced motorcycle riding, is to take a driving test. You’ll need to make an appointment for this at a driver license office.
Note that if you’re enrolled in a motorcycle driver training course, you will take the road test at the school and receive your motorcycle license there.
The Pennsylvania test for motorcycles includes:
- A pre-trip inspection, when you demonstrate you know how to look for unsafe mechanical items on your bike.
- A demonstration of your riding skills, including stops and turns and figure-eights.
