Which motorcycle test do you mean? The knowledge test? Or the road test?

You don't need an appointment for the knowledge test. Just walk into a MA RMV driver license office, pay the $30 fee, show your paperwork, and take the exam on the automated testing system. It's a first-come, first-served situation, and if you pass you'll receive a field vision and color recognition test.

But, you're required to have an appointment for the road motorcycle permit test and you must call the RMV at (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926 to set it. Don't try to do so at the driver license office.

Obtaining Motorcycle Education and Training

Although you're encouraged to take a drivers ed or driver training class where you can learn about motorcycle riding and motorcycle safety, Massachusetts doesn't require you to do so.

And, you don't have to take a written practice test to get ready for the knowledge test, either; however, doing so can enhance your chances of passing it on your initial attempt and that means both getting your motorcycle drivers license faster and saving some money along the way. Keep in mind that each attempt costs $30, so repeated failures will add up.

Have any additional questions regarding motorcycles or a motorcycle license? Consult the MA RMV at (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926.
