Do I have to take a MA motorcycle safety course or drivers ed? Massachusetts

New Driver Checklist

The Massachusetts Motorcycle Rider Education Training Course

The state offers a Motorcycle Rider Education Training Course, but do you have to enroll in it? Or any other motorcycle safety class?

Absolutely not.

However, taking this motorcycle safety course is a wise move, and for two reasons:

  1. Doing so can enhance your ability to pass the written motorcycle permit test and the road motorcycle test. Beyond that, these kinds of drivers ed and driver training classes reinforce important safety practices that could save you from a severe accident - or just make you an overall better motorcycle rider.
  2. If you have a current Massachusetts drivers license and have a valid motorcycle permit, you can bypass the RMV road test if you successfully complete the state's Motorcycle Rider Education Training Course. Just be sure to present your certificate to the RMV within 90 days of class completion. You'll then be able to add a motorcycle endorsement to your driver license for $15, and enjoying the pleasures of motorcycle riding.
And, don't overlook the virtues of taking a practice test or two to prepare you for the written test. Remember, it costs $30 every time you try again with the official written exam.
