MA Motorcycle License Requirements (Younger than 18)

You can't apply for a Massachusetts motorcycle license if you're younger than 18, unless you:

  • Are at least 16 1/2 years old.
  • Have completed the Massachusetts junior operator's license (JOL) requirements.
  • Have written parental consent to operate motorcycles.
If you meet all three requirements, you can try for your motorcycle driver license. But, you'll need to pass the road test first.

Road Test Process

You must make an appointment for this test by calling the RMV at (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926. When you visit the drivers license office for the motorcycle test bring an insured, registered, fully operational motorcycle. The examiner will inspect the vehicle for safety purposes before the test can begin.

Be sure to bring the completed license application with you to the drivers license office, along with payment for the $50 license fee.

If you pass the test and take care of the other requirements, you'll receive a five-year motorcycle license.

Driver Training Requirements?

You don't need to enroll in a drivers ed class to qualify for a license. However, taking such a motorcycle safety class will help you develop your motorcycle riding skills and prepare you for the road test, just like a practice test will get ready for the written motorcycle permit exam.
