Getting Your Motorcycle Permit

Do you already have your motorcycle permit? If not, you'll have to do that before you can get a motorcycle license.

You can obtain your motorcycle permit by following these steps:

  1. Study the material in the Massachusetts motorcycle handbook. You can also take a practice test or two to increase your chances of passing the exam on the first try.
  2. Visit a MA RMV driver license with the proper documents.
  3. Pass the written motorcycle test.
  4. Pass a vision test.
  5. Pay the $30 fee.

Getting Your Motorcycle License

Now, once you have your permit, you can develop your motorcycle riding skills. You'll need to do this in order to be proficient enough to pass the road test that's required to gain your motorcycle license. While you don't have to enroll in a drivers ed or driver training class for operating motorcycles, you might want to consider doing so as they do an excellent job of teaching motorcycle safety and preparing riders for the challenge that's ahead.

When you feel you're ready, you'll need to go back to the driver license office for the skills test. You must have an appointment for this, and the only way to make one is to call the RMV at (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926.

Be sure to bring an insured, registered, fully operational cycle for your test; the motorcycle must be approved by the examiner before the test can begin.

If you pass the test, you'll be granted a Class M drivers license (i.e., a motorcycle license) for $50. The license is valid for five years.
