Do I have to take a NY motorcycle safety course or drivers ed? New York

New Driver Checklist

NY Motorcycle Safety and Education Requirements

Whether you must complete a motorcycle safety course or other driver training program before you can get your motorcycle license depends a great deal on whether you already hold a valid New York drivers license.

Drivers Ed

If you do not possess a NY drivers license or some other class of license, you must complete a driver training class in order to make an appointment for the road exam portion of the motorcycle test and legally operate motorcycles in the state. This means you must provide a drivers ed completion certificate from a state-approved course.

Motorcycle Safety Course

You are not required to enroll in a safety course to receive a New York motorcycle license, although participation is highly recommended. A safety course will teach you how to become a safe motorcycle rider.

And, if that’s not incentive enough, if you take a DMV-approved course through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), you'll receive a road test waiver provided you meet the following qualifications:

  • You are 16 years old or older.
  • You have a valid NY license.
  • You have a valid class M or MJ permit.
  • You present your course completion card within two years of completing the course.

Before Taking the Skills Test

Before you can make a motorcycle test appointment you must first obtain a motorcycle permit by passing a multiple-choice exam. To study, grab a NY motorcycle manual from any DMV office (the same office where you’d go for any other driver license issue) or download one from the DMV website. Every question on the test is based on information explained in the manual.

After studying the manual and learning all about safe and legal motorcycle riding in NY, you'll next want to take a practice test. These practice tests feature multiple-choice questions similar to those found on the actual exam. You can find practice tests online from a large number of independent sites.
