After you turn 15 and a half years old you can apply to receive your California (CA) motorcycle permit. Visit a CA Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) service center to apply for the motorcycle riding permit.

HINT: If you dial (800) 777-0133 and make an appointment prior to visiting the DMV, you can shorten your waiting time.

Applying for a California Motorcycle Permit

Complete Form DL-44. Dial (800) 777-0133 to request a copy of the application; it is not available for download online.

Bring your parents or legal guardians with you to the DMV office if you are younger than 18 years. Your parents or legal guardians will sign the back of the application. Also bring a copy of your motorcycle insurance policy to the DMV office.

Provide documents that prove your citizenship and residency. Acceptable documents that you can use are:

  • Social Security number
  • Official citizenship or naturalization certificates
  • Recent paycheck stub
  • Birth certificate
  • Current bank statement
Pay the $31 motorcycle learners permit fee. The drivers permit is good for 12 months. You can take up to three repeat written and road tests (as needed) to get your motorcycle license after you pay the fee.

Written drivers license examinations are not given after 4:30 p.m. If you are younger than 18, you must keep your permit for at least six months before you apply to receive your motorcycle license.

Before you contact the DMV to schedule your motorcycle test so you can receive your license, enroll in a motorcycle safety program. You can also enroll in the program before you receive your permit.

The motorcycles training program is administered by the CA Highway Patrol. Data covered during the training is similar to what you would learn during drivers ed or driver training to get your regular drivers license.

While you are in the training make sure that you study the CA motorcycle driver license manual. Partner with a friend or relative to take a practice test based on information in the manual. This will help you to pass the written and road tests so that you can get your motorcycle license as soon as possible.
