Applying for Your NJ Motorcycle Permit

Before you can apply for a motorcycle license, you first need a NJ motorcycle permit. You must be at least 17 years old to apply. If you meet this age requirement, visit any MVC driver license office and follow these steps:

  1. Complete a motorcycle permit application.
  2. Satisfy the state's 6 Point ID Verification requirements.
  3. Pay a $5 permit fee with cash or a check, money order, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express).
  4. Pass the vision test.
  5. Pass the knowledge test.
The written motorcycle test is based only on information found in the New Jersey motorcycle manual. Study the manual to pass the test. You can get a copy, for free, from any MVC location, or download one from the MVC website.

After studying the manual, take at least one motorcycle practice test. You can find these online; they mirror the actual exam with multiple-choice questions on everything related to motorcycle riding.

After Obtaining Your Motorcycle Drivers Permit

After earning your learners permit you must wait 20 days to become eligible for taking the state's motorcycle driving test – unless, of course, the MVC waives your driving test requirement for completing a motorcycle safety course (see below).

After 20 days pass, make an appointment online with a Driver Testing Center, and on the day of the test, arrive with:

  • Identification.
  • Your motorcycle permit.
  • A motorcycle that's legally registered and insured.
Pass the test and you'll receive a New Jersey motorcycle drivers license.

Complete a Motorcycle Safety Course

The MVC will waive your test requirement if you enroll in an approved New Jersey Motorcycle Safety Education program.

The three-day course is the motorcycle world's version of drivers ed class, with a strong emphasis on safe motorcycle riding techniques and practices, and with this kind of specialized driver training you’ll hit the roads with a solid grasp on how to legally and safely operate motorcycles in New Jersey.
