Do I have to take a NJ motorcycle safety course or drivers ed? New Jersey

New Driver Checklist

The New Jersey Motorcycle Safety Education Program

The NJ MVC recommends but does not mandate enrollment in a motorcycle safety course. This course will teach you safe and legal motorcycle riding skills.

As extra incentive to participate in a three-day safety course, the MVC will waive your road test requirement if you participate in an approved New Jersey Motorcycle Safety Education Program.

Becoming a Motorcycle Rider in New Jersey

To become a motorcycle rider in New Jersey you must meet many requirements, starting with being at least 17 years old to apply for a motorcycle permit. You must own a permit before you can apply for a motorcycle license.

To obtain a permit, visit any NJ MVC driver license office and follow these steps:

  1. Complete a motorcycle license application.
  2. Satisfy the state's 6 Point ID Verification system.
  3. Pass a vision test.
  4. Pass a knowledge test.
  5. Pay a $5 permit fee.
You DO NOT have to provide proof of attending and completing a drivers ed class or some form of driver training focused on motorcycles.

To pass the knowledge test, study the NJ motorcycle manual and take at least one online practice test. You can collect a manual, free of charge, from any MVC location.

After obtaining a permit, you must wait at least 20 days before you can take the road test portion of the motorcycle test, the final step towards earning a motorcycle drivers license.
