Find Your State's Motorcycle Drivers Manual

Most states provide a copy of their motorcycle manual on their official DMV (or equivalent) website. Alabama, Delaware, Oklahoma, and West Virginia are just a few of the states that make it possible for rider hopefuls to download a motorcycle manual from the DMV website.

Other states make it just as easy, but blend information about motorcycles in with the regular drivers handbook. South Carolina, for example, dedicates a chapter of its drivers license handbook to details about obtaining a motorcycle permit, taking the motorcycle test, and applying for a motorcycle license.

Still, there are some states that require applicants to obtain manuals the good ol’ fashioned way. Mississippi is one such state, requiring riders to stop by a drivers license location to pick up a copy of the motorcycle manual.

Study Your Motorcycle Drivers Manual

If you don’t find information about the following topics in your manual, be sure to call your DMV office for details:

  • Age and previous permit/license requirements. Can you be younger than 18? Do you need a special motorcycle permit, or will a regular learners permit suffice? What if you already have a full drivers license?
  • Motorcycle training requirements. Many states require applicants younger than 18 (some require all applicants, regardless of age) to enroll in a motorcycle course.
  • Motorcycle riding tips. Because most states model their manuals after a standard set by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, this information probably isn’t missing.
  • Written and road test requirements (and possible waivers for enrolling in a motorcycle training course). Also look for practice test questions.
  • Appointment requirements.
  • Motorcycle permit, license, and/or endorsement fees.
