Registering Your Motorcycle in California

If you purchased your motorcycle from a dealership, your dealer will handle the motorcycle registration processes for you; however, if you purchased the motorcycle from a private seller, you’ll need to register it yourself.

Fortunately, the registration process for motorcycles (and other bikes; see below) is basically the same as the vehicle registration process for regular passenger cars and trucks.

Before you start motorcycle riding, visit your local CA DMV location within 10 days of purchasing the motorcycle (you can call ahead for an appointment) and bring:

  • A completed Application for Title and Registration. You can download this from the CA DMV website. Make sure the application includes your name and the name of any other registered owner, as well as the name of any lienholder.
  • A completed bill of sale.
  • A completed Odometer Disclosure Statement if the motorcycle is fewer than 10 years old. Generally you can meet this requirement by completing the odometer disclosure section of the motorcycle’s title. Make sure both you and the seller sign it.
  • Proof of insurance or financial responsibility.
  • All applicable fees. The fees you’ll pay depend on the exact vehicle you’re registering, your county of residence, what kind of license plate you get, and even whether you have any unpaid parking tickets or toll evasions. To make things easy, the CA DMV website provides a registration fee calculator for you. Note that, for sure, you will have to pay a one-time Motorcycle Cross Index Fee ($1) and a register and renewal Motorcycle Safety Fee ($2).
NOTE: Motorcycle registration and title transfers generally take place at the same time, so be sure to bring all your title paperwork (properly completed and signed) and fees along with you.

Registering Your Moped or Scooter

California does require certain motor-driven cycles, mopeds, and motorized bicycles to be registered. (Most mopeds and motorized bicycles only have to be registered once, though, with no renewals.)

Scooters, on the other hand, do not have to be registered.

For more information about motorcycle registration – and which bikes do and do not have to undergo it – contact your local CA DMV location.
