Georgia Registration Requirements for Motorcycles and Other Bikes

You probably already know you must register motorcycles but, in the state of Georgia, scooters are also classified as motorcycles and must be registered as motorcycles with the Georgia Motor Vehicle Division (GA MVD).

Bikes Exempt from Motorcycle Registration

Mopeds and off-road bikes, on the other hand, do not qualify as motorcycles and do not require vehicle registration with the MVD.  In addition to a moped or other off-road bike, vehicles exempt from registration include motorized carts, off-road vehicles, and all-terrain vehicles such as four-wheelers.

Registering Your Motorcycle or Scooter

Before you take off motorcycle riding, note that in Georgia, vehicles must be registered with the MVD within 30 days of the owner’s birthday.

In order to register your motorcycle or scooter at the MVD, the following paperwork is required:

  • Georgia drivers license or ID Card.
  • Completed Tag/Title Application.
  • Valid title, certification of origin from the manufacturer, or proof of ownership.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • Proof of Georgia residency.
  • Completed Certificate of Inspection by a law enforcement agency.
Additional requirements include the:

  • Annual $20 registration fee.
  • $18 title fee.
  • Penalty fees of up to $10 for delayed or late registration.
Fees are payable by check, cash, or money order at your local Tax Commissioner’s Tag Office.
