Required Fees for Motorcycle Registration in Georgia

In the state of Georgia, vehicle registration fees are paid annually to the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), care of the Office of the Tax Commissioner.

Motor vehicles requiring registration include motorcycles and scooters, as a scooter is considered a motorcycle under GA law. Mopeds, off-road bikes, and all-terrain vehicles, on the other hand, do not require registration. Though a moped can be mistaken for a scooter, mopeds are not classified as scooters in the state of Georgia.

Required Fees

The fees for motorcycle registration and registration renewal include the following:

  • $20 tag/decal fee.
  • $18 title fee.
  • $1 mailing fee, if you require your registration mailed to you.
  • Ad valorem tax.
  • Sales tax.
  • $10 penalty fee for late registration.

How and Where to Pay

All fees are payable to your local Office of the Tax Commissioner, via cash, check, or money order. In most counties, checks must be imprinted with your bank’s emblem and address.

Out of state checks are not typically accepted, and cash is not accepted through the mail.

Late Registration and Registration Periods

In order to keep your motorcycle riding legal, you must register within the specified registration period for your county.

In counties with yea-round registration periods, vehicles must be registered with 30 days prior to your birthday; registration is considered late if the vehicle is not registered by midnight of that day. In counties with staggered registration periods, such as Talbot County, vehicles must be registered by midnight of the last day of month, according to the following schedule:

  • If your birthday falls in January, February, or March, you must register your motorcycle in January.
  • If your birthday falls in April, May, or June, you must register your motorcycle in February.
  • Those with July, August, and September birthdays must register in March.
  • Those with October, November, and December birthdays must register in April.
