Registering Motorcycles and Other Bikes in New York

The NY DMV requires the following bikes to be registered:

  • Motorcycles
  • Mopeds
  • Scooters
Mopeds and scooters are defined as "low-speed vehicles with two or three wheels" requiring vehicle registration and a drivers license to operate.

You CANNOT register any of the following motorized bikes:

  • Motorized Scooter (This pertains to a device that comes with a handlebar and allows you to stand while riding, sometimes referred to as a Go-Ped.)
  • Mini-bike
  • Dirt Bike
  • Go-Kart
  • Motor-assisted Bicycle (This refers to a bicycle with a small motor attached.)
You'll face arrest if caught operating any these bikes on any public street, parking lot, or sidewalk.

Motorcycle Registration

You must register a motorcycle, moped or scooter with the New York DMV. Unlike cars, motorcycle registrations are valid for one year, instead of two, and expire annually on April 30.

In addition, for legal motorcycle riding you must have your bike inspected once every 12 months at a state-approved Motorcycle Inspection Station.
