New York Vehicle Registration for Motorcycles

For motorcycle registration visit any NY DMV office and bring:

  • A completed Registration/Title Application (Form MV-82).
  • A completed Statement of Transaction for Sales Tax (Form DTF-802).
  • Proof of ownership.
  • Proof of identity.
  • Cash or a check or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express) to pay the $17.50 registration fee and, if applicable, sales tax.
You must follow the same steps if you own a moped or a scooter.

Annual New York Motorcycle Registration Renewal

Unlike passenger vehicles that must be renewed every two years, a motorcycle registration has a one-year life span. All motorcycles, mopeds, and scooters will have a registration that expires on April 30, regardless of the initial registration date.

In addition, all bikes have to be inspected annually for legal motorcycle riding. Inspections must take place at a state-approved inspection center. These are distinguished by yellow and black signs reading "Official NYS Motorcycle Inspection Station." If you buy the bike from a private individual, you'll have 10 days from the date of registration to have it inspected.
