Obtaining New York Motorcycle License Plates

You'll receive a motorcycle license plate when you initially register your motorcycle with the New York DMV. Motorcycles require only one plate.

So before registering decide whether you want a standard New York license plate or a customized plate. After deciding, visit any DMV office with the following documents:

  • Proof of ownership.
  • Proof of identity.
  • Proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Proof of sales tax payment, if applicable.
  • A completed Registration/Title Application (Form MV-82).
  • A form of payment for the registration fee, title fee, license plate fee, and sales tax, if applicable.
If you opt for a standard NY license plate ($15.50), you'll receive it immediately while at the DMV office and can start motorcycle riding as soon as you leave. But, if you order a customized plate, you'll be issued a temporary plate until your customized plate arrives several weeks later in the mail.

Keep in mind that if you opt for a standard plate, you can always order a customized plate at a later time. New York customized plates do come with higher fees. For a list of specialized plates visit the NY DMV website.
