Transferring Motorcycle Titles in New York

Your title transfer process will depend on whether you’re the seller or the buyer.

Title Transfer If You're the Motorcycle Seller

Here's what you need to do to transfer the title:

  1. Record the mileage on the title if the motorcycle is 10 or fewer years old.
  2. Complete the title's damage disclosure statement if the motorcycle is eight or fewer years old.
  3. Sign and date the title.
  4. Complete a bill of sale.
  5. Complete a Statement of Transaction (Form DTF-802) for sales tax purposes.
  6. Make copies of every document.
Be sure, before handing over the title, that you remove the motorcycle's license plate. Unless you plan to transfer the plate to one of your other motorcycles, you must surrender it to the NY DMV. Otherwise, if you leave the plate on the bike you could be falsely charged with traffic and/or parking violations.

Title Transfer If You're the Motorcycle Buyer

Before writing a check, examine the title thoroughly. Make sure that the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the title matches the VIN on the bike.

If the bike is 10 years old or younger, the seller will need to record an odometer reading. If not, you'll have to get a completed Odometer and Damage Disclosure Statement (Form MV-103) from the seller.

If the motorcycle is eight years old or younger, the seller must complete the title's damage disclosure statement; or, if not on the title, on a separate Odometer and Damage Disclosure Statement (Form MV-103).

Once you’ve made sure everything lines up, visit any NY DMV office with the following:

  • The signed over title.
  • The Odometer and Damage Disclosure Statement, if applicable.
  • A Statement of Transaction (Form DTF-802).
  • Proof of identification.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card to pay all applicable fees, including the $50 title fee.
You’ll title and register the motorcycle at the same time.
