What is the state requirement for auto insurance regarding liability and personal injury protection in New York? New York
New York Liability and Personal Injury Insurance Requirements
Car insurance in New York is mandatory. To legally comply, you must carry, at the very minimum, the following liability insurance coverage:- Injury: $25,000/$50,000
- Death: $50,000/$100,000
- Property: $10,000
- Your personal injury insurance provider must be licensed by the New York State Insurance Department. The state will not recognize out-of-state insurance.
- Your vehicle has to be insured at all times, even when in storage or off the road (motorcycles are the exception). If you allow your auto insurance to lapse you must immediately surrender your license plates to the DMV. There's no getting around this. Your insurance company must, by law, alert the NY DMV whenever insurance has been dropped.
- Lapsed 1-30 days: $8 per day
- Lapsed 31-60 days: $10 per day
- Lapsed 61-90 days: $12 per day
