Registering Motorcycles and Other Bikes in North Carolina

Motorcycle riding in North Carolina requires motorcycle registration.

Mopeds and scooters are not, however, held to motorcycle registration requirements unless the moped or scooter possesses an engine larger than 50 cc and/or exceeds 30 mph on a level surface. (Moped and scooter laws are extremely lenient in North Carolina. Riding requirements are limited to wearing a helmet and being at least 16 years old.)

The NC DMV handles motorcycle registration. The entire process is identical to vehicle registration except for the registration fee. Passenger car owners pay $28; motorcycle owners only $18.

The required registration forms and documents will depend on your situation. North Carolina has different requirements for different scenarios:

  • Motorcycle purchased from an individual.
  • Motorcycle previously titled in another state under your name.
  • Motorcycle with an out-of-state title held by a lienholder.
  • Motorcycle purchased from a dealer.

You'll need to register in person at any DMV office for the initial registration.
