Will I get points on my driving record if I get a speeding ticket?
Yes. If your state assesses points when you get a speeding ticket, you will get points added onto your driving record, in addition to varying fines.
How many points depends on your state. In Missouri, you get either 2 or 3 points. In New York State, you can get 11 points added for a citation where you were going 40 or more miles per hour over the speed limit, and just 3 if you were going 1-10 miles per hour above the limit. Californians generally get 1 point for speeding violations.
In addition, if you accrue a predetermined number of points for traffic tickets within a set time period, or if you don't pay the fine, your state may have the option of suspending your driver’s license.
