Motorcycles and Registration Renewal in North Carolina

The NC DMV will send you a motorcycle registration renewal form before your registration expires. Do not ignore this. Getting caught motorcycle riding with an expired registration will lead to being ticketed and fined. To simplify the process, the DMV gives you three renewal options: online, in person, or by mail.

NOTE: If you own a moped or scooter, you’re probably off the hook. North Carolina typically doesn’t require vehicle registration for bikes like mopeds and scooters to be registered unless either has an engine larger than 50 cc and/or it can exceed 30 mph on a level surface.

Online

You can find the online registration renewal application on the DMV website. You will need:

  • Your title number.
  • Your license plate number.
  • Your motorcycle insurance policy number.
  • A Visa or MasterCard to pay registration renewal fee.
You’ll receive your new motorcycle registration certificate in the mail within seven days.

In Person

Visit any DMV office with:

  • Proof of passing a vehicle inspection.
  • Proof of liability insurance.
  • Your license plate number.
  • Cash or a check or money order to pay the registration renewal fee.

Mail

Follow these steps:

  1. Complete the registration renewal notice.
  2. Write a check for the registration renewal fee (listed on the renewal notice) and $1 postage charge.
  3. Mail everything to:
NC Division of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 29620
Raleigh, NC 27626-0620
