How do I obtain motorcycle license plates in North Carolina? North Carolina
Obtaining Motorcycle License Plates in North Carolina
You'll receive your NC motorcycle license plate (unlike cars, motorcycles only require one plate) during registration. If you opt for a standard issued license plate you'll immediately receive the plate at the DMV office. There is no additional fee; the $18 motorcycle registration fee includes the license plate.
If, however, you order a personalized plate (also referred to as a vanity plate) you'll be charged an additional $30 fee on top of the $18 registration charge. A personalized motorcycle plate is limited to seven characters and spaces. Unlike most other states, North Carolina allows punctuation marks and a select few symbols (such as an asterisk and an ampersand). There is no guarantee your personalized plate request will be accepted, and the NC DMV will reject any plate combination it deems as offensive or in poor taste.
If you order a personalized plate during registration, you'll be issued a temporary plate – which will allow for legal motorcycle riding – until your permanent one arrives in the mail.
