North Carolina Motorcycle Registration and Renewal Fees

When it comes time for motorcycle registration or registration renewal you'll be required to pay one or several of the following fees:

  • Motorcycle registration: $18
  • Motorcycle registration renewal: $18
  • Specialized motorcycle license plate: $30
  • Motorcycle title: $40
  • Instant motorcycle title: $75
  • Motorcycle transfer license plate: $15
Keep in mind that you probably won’t have to pay any kind of registration fee if you own a moped or scooter. The NC DMV typically doesn’t require mopeds or scooters to be registered or titled. Usually, the determining factors are if it has engine larger than 50 cc and/or exceeds 30 mph on a level surface. Essentially the only requirements tied to riding these bikes is wearing a helmet and being at least 16 years old.

Unfortunately, such is not the case if you're motorcycle riding. Law requires residents to maintain vehicle registration for motorcycles at all times. This requires more than just paying fees. You must also carry liability insurance and have the motorcycle pass an annual safety inspection.
