Registering Motorcycles, Mopeds, and Scooters in New Jersey

New Jersey requires every motorcycle, moped, and scooter to be titled and registered and to meet the minimum safety standards as defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Other Bikes

Dirt bikes cannot be registered or titled, which means owners are restricted to riding only on private property. You can’t treat dirt bike riding like motorcycle riding.

The same applies to pocket bikes, which the NJ MVC views as toys. However, some municipalities have recently created designated riding areas for pocket bikes. To ride in one of these designated areas you'll need to register your pocket bike with the governing municipality.

Motorcycle Registration

The MVC handles motorcycle, moped and scooter registration. The registration process is straightforward, similar to the vehicle registration process you’d go through for a car.

Be sure to take care of your bike’s registration as soon as possible. If caught operating a motorcycle, moped, or scooter without valid registration you will be ticketed, fined, and possibly even face community service.
