Understanding the New Jersey Lemon Laws

The New Jersey Lemon Law covers new and used cars, protecting you, the consumer, should you unknowingly purchasing a lemon.

Lemon Law for New Cars

The law covers cars and motorcycles (bought or leased) during the first two years, starting from the delivery date, or 24,000 miles – whichever comes first.

Lemon Law for Used Cars

For your used vehicle to qualify for lemon coverage it must meet the following requirements:

  • Purchased from a licensed dealership.
  • Be seven model years old or less.
  • Purchase price must be at least $3,000.
  • Mileage under 100,000 miles.
If your vehicle meets these requirements, the dealer must provide you with one of the following warranties:

  • 24,000 miles or fewer: 90-day warranty or 3,000 miles (whichever comes first)
  • 24,000-60,000 miles: 60-day warranty or 2,000 miles (whichever comes first)
  • 60,000-100,000 miles: 30-day warranty or 1,000 miles (whichever comes first)

Got a Lemon? Contact the State Attorney General

If you think you've got a lemon on your hands, contact the state's Attorney General, not the MVC. You'll be instructed on what documents and papers are needed to file a claim, and you might want to consider soliciting the help of a Lemon Law attorney. An attorney who specializes in NJ’s Lemon Law can help you with everything from all the services you received (or didn’t receive) from an auto repair mechanic to the paperwork you have to complete to file the claim.

Keep in mind there are no guarantees when you file. Your case will be heard by an administrative judge in the Office of Administrative Law, during which time you must prove that your car is a lemon car. (You can see how a Lemon Law lawyer might come in handy, right?)
