Registering Motorcycles, Mopeds, and Scooters in Illinois

All motorcycles, including bikes like mopeds and scooters, require vehicle registration to legally operate in Illinois.

Motorcycle registration is handled by the Secretary of State (SOS). The initial registration must be completed in person. If the motorcycle, moped, or scooter is new, you must register it within 20 days of the purchase date. If you're a new IL resident, you have 30 days to register it with the SOS.

When registering, be sure to bring

  • Proper identification.
  • Proof of ownership.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • Cash or a check to pay all pertinent fees.
You'll receive your Illinois registration and license plate immediately. If you opt for a customized plate you'll be given a temporary license plate until the permanent plate arrives in the mail. Either way, you won’t have to wait to go motorcycle riding.

Keep in mind that if you reside in a county requiring emissions testing, your motorcycle is exempt.
