IL Vehicle Registration for Motorcycles, Mopeds, and Scooters

The motorcycle registration process is straightforward. You follow the same steps as if you were registering a car, and these steps also apply if you have other kinds of bikes that require registering, such as a scooter or moped.

Visit any Illinois Secretary of State office and:

  1. Complete an Application for Vehicle Transaction(s). You can’t download this form, but you can obtain one from any SOS office or by requesting an application by phone at (217) 782-7132.
  2. Provide proof of insurance.
  3. Provide the bike's title.
  4. If the bike was registered in another state, bring the out-of-state title. If the title is not available bring the bike's registration certificate and proof of paying sales tax.
  5. Provide tax form RUT-50, or tax form RUT-25 if you purchased the motorcycle from an out-of-state dealer.
  6. Pay the $95 title fee and $39 motorcycle registration fee with cash or check (some offices accept credit cards). Be prepared to pay additional fees if you want a vanity or customized plate.
Your vehicle registration is valid for one year. Be sure to renew on time to keep your motorcycle riding legal. You will be ticketed and fined if caught riding with an expired registration.
