Obtaining Illinois Motorcycle License Plates

You'll receive your motorcycle license plate (only one plate for motorcycles) during registration. If it's your initial motorcycle registration you'll receive both a plate and a registration renewal sticker.

Illinois motorcycle plates are issued according to piston displacement: 150 cc or more and 150 cc or less.

Vanity and Personalized Plates

Unless you state otherwise, the IL will issue you a random license plate and you can be on your way motorcycle riding.

But, other plate options do exist:

  • 150 cc or More: Vanity and personalized plate options are available by request.
  • 150 cc or Less: Vanity and personalized plate options are available by request. This plate is distinct in that a letter precedes the number.

License Plate Fees

  • Initial registration with random license plate: $134 ($95 title, $39 registration)
  • Initial registration with vanity license plate: $184 ($95, title, $39 registration, $50 vanity plate)
  • Initial registration with personalized license plate: $159 ($95 title, $39 registration, $25 personalized plate)
