Transferring Motorcycle Titles in Illinois

The steps you’ll take depend on whether you’re the seller or the buyer.

Seller

If you're the seller in a motorcycle title transfer, you'll need to add the following to the title:

  • The bike's odometer reading.
  • The buyer's name.
  • The date of sale.
  • Your signature.
A bill of sale is not required by the Illinois Secretary of State (IL SOS), but you should make a copy for your own records.

Be sure to remove the motorcycle's license plate. In Illinois the plate belongs to the owner, not the vehicle.

Buyer

When you're the buyer in a title transfer, you must make sure the seller has properly signed off the title by including an odometer reading, date of sale, and signature. You should also compare the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the title with the VIN on the motorcycle.

Once you have the title in hand, you'll need to submit the following to any IL SOS office:

  • A completed Application for Vehicle Transaction(s), Form VSD 190. You can’t download this form, but you can pick one up from any SOS location, or request one by phone at (800) 252-8980.
  • The motorcycle's title.
  • A completed RUT-50 tax form.
  • Payment for $95 title fee and $39 registration fee. Just like with regular passenger vehicles, additional fees are required for personalized or vanity plates for motorcycles.
You must submit all title transfer documents within 20 days of the date of purchase.
